My husband and I got ours in San Leandro on some music shop, which I think now closed...

After the fact, we found out about Leo's which is where we get our portable speakers, replacement faders, cables and connectors and so forth.

They are located on Telegraph on the Oakland side, near 51st street.

On a moderate budget, I would say first and foremost not to get too enamored by functions and compromise quality. There are some really inexpensive components with all sorts of bells and whistles that are not going to last very long for you.

Pioneer is probably the most prevalent in clubs, for good reasons. But if you're just doing it for fun, play around with a few brands and see if you like something better. Denon is great too. Pioneer is a good value for the money, it's well-designed, simple to learn, reliable and can handle a lot of wear and tear so I'm gonna stick with that for my recommendation.

I don't see a lot of value spending extra for a 4-channel mixer, the basic Pio 2-channel mixer has a dual inputs per channel and has a toggle switch for each. It's a lot simpler, same functionality with about half as many knobs. You can't crossfade with more than 2 channels anyway unless you get a LOT more complex with the setup. The Pioneer mixers are made for use with Pioneer decks and enables relay play on the decks which creates a lot of sound possibilities.

I would recommend:

Two Pioneer CDJ-100 decks (or CDJ-200 if you like to loop)

a DJM-300 mixer.

Probably run you $800-$1100. Best part is you will not outgrow these components, I still use mine all the time and just integrate stuff to them. Have fun!

Well I finally at the point where I am fully ready to purchase DJ equipment. I can afford equipment moderately priced.

I am interested in mainly using CD's. But may want a mixer that is more than 2 channels (probably 4 channels) as I have a working turntable, a Linneartech BD-1600 phase II.

So I am interested in a 4-channel mixer, 2 CD players and all necessary accompanying equipment. I am seeking advice from folks in this tribe on what to purchase, and if anyone knows where I can get equipment in the SF Bay area that would be great.

Any suggestions on good beginning equipment?
